Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member of the EDC community and the gear they rely on every day. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.

We head down to the Lone Star State to connect with Rob (@rwpenny), who works on his family’s working cattle ranch. Rob is a true outdoorsman who enjoys working, playing and living his life on the ranch with his family. Read on for the full story of Rob’s rugged yet exquisite daily carry.

Featured Tools:

  • Knife #1: Kawamura Zulu Lockback
Ryu Kawamura is one of the most talented traditional knife makers in the world. He is a renowned knife maker from Japan who has been highly praised by many collectors and fellow knife makers including the living legend, Tony Bose.

He focuses almost exclusively on making Tony Bose pattern knives. This fine example is a lockback Zulu pattern prototype #1 covered with exhibition grade Sambar stag scales. The blade is a satin hand finished CPM-154 steel. Traditional knives have always been my main interest in knife collecting, and this is one of the finest specimens in the world today.
  • Knife #2: Tom Mayo Covert
Tom Mayo has a very long history of being one of the most sought after knife makers currently making knives. This particular knife is Tom's medium Covert with a Stellite 6k blade and all titanium scales and hardware down to the screws.

  • Wallet: Enrique Pena
This is a handmade front pocket wallet made by the super talented knife maker Enrique Pena. This wallet features beautiful Horween leather and is a great option for those seeking to carry a slim, low profile wallet.
  • Handkerchief: Fox Hanx
My good friends Mary Beth and Michael from Fox Hanx are a husband and wife team who specialize in making elegant handkerchiefs which are a wonderful compliment to any EDC collection. My hanks serve as colorful additions to my pictures as well useful nose duty material for my gritty dad duties!

  • Pen: Karas Kustoms
This is a copper bolt-action pen from Karas Kustoms. I enjoy using a heavier pen and the copper Karas Kustoms bolt with its solid copper construction fits the bill nicely.

My name is Rob Penny and I live in Weatherford, Texas on our family's working cattle ranch. My wife and I own and operate our family pharmacy.

When not at work, I spend as much time as possible with our two young children. My hobbies include hunting, fishing, archery, shooting guns and working (playing) on our ranch as frequently as I can.

My love for gear began when my dad gave me a Case stockman when I was probably 10 years old (I still have this knife). From that point on, I have collected pocket knives and routinely carried them.

It wasn't until a few years ago that I began collecting handmade custom knives. At that point, I began to seek out other collectors via Instagram. That is where I was first introduced to the term "EDC". Now, it's a fun way to share my hobby and passion with other like-minded individuals in the IG community.

Favorite EDC Tool:

If I had to pick a favorite item that is listed, I'd have to pick the Mayo Covert.

This particular knife was at the top of my "want" list when I started collecting modern knives. There's just something to be said about a design and execution that stands on its own, apart from others, without all the fancy embellishments that many knives have today. The beauty of this knife is in its simplicity. The user-friendly size and blade shape are added bonuses to this knife that so often finds its way into my pocket.
