“Nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Engraved onto the J.L. Lawson & Co. Reminder Coin, the poignant words by Benjamin Franklin still rings true today. It’s a much needed, resounding reminder that life is short, nothing is set in stone and that we should never take anything for granted.
The art of both sides of the coin is subtly different. Both have imagery that defines death and taxes, but the opposing sides have a different emphasis. The "heads" side depicts “death” and features the skull as the centerpiece. The burning candles represent the passage of time and the small stack of coins hint at the inevitability of taxes.
The "tails" side highlights “taxes” with the scale signifying a balance with it tipping towards the side with the coins. The opposite side of the scale carries a Lily which has long been known to represent death. Completing the artwork is the opened eye and closed eye which pays subtle homage to the notions of life and death.
