The Spyderco Fred Perrin Subway Bowie is as storied and illustrious a knife as it gets. A special collaboration spanning decades with French custom knifemaker Fred Perrin, the Spyderco Fred Perrin Subway Bowie builds upon his existing designs for a truly unique and formidable blade.
A veteran of service with the French Army, an expert close-combat instructor, and a world-class martial artist, Fred Perrin knows his knives. His signature handle designs, which pioneered the use of index-finger holes and deep forefinger choils more than 25 years ago, made their way into the Spyderco Street Bowie in 2001.
Through the years, the Spyderco Street Bowie has continually evolved and refined – with the end result being the ultra-compact Subway Bowie we have today.
Inspired by the "Apache" street gangs of early 20th century Paris and the small, ultra-concealable weapons of that culture, along with the covert-edged weapons carried by allied special forces during World War II – the Subway Bowie is informed by that history and heritage.
At the cutting edge, the Subway Bowie features a LC200N PlainEdge bowie blade with a sturdy saber grind. LC200N is one of the premier steels of Spyderco's popular Salt Series and is actually used by NASA for the ball bearings used in aerospace equipment. What's more, the blade is available in a classic satin finish, or a low-profile black ceramic coating for more stealthy operations.
The fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle is injection molded directly onto the blade tang for maximum strength and durability. As with all of Fred Perrin's designs, the Subway Bowie features his iconic deep index-finger choil and jimping for confident handling and a positive grip.
Completing this little masterpiece is a custom-molded Boltaron sheath. Designed for neck carry, it includes a breakaway ball chain and features a rectangular profile to allow the sheathed knife lay flat against the chest.
Made in Japan to the highest standards, the Spyderco Fred Perrin Subway Bowie is as good as it gets when it comes to low-profile, high-impact blades. Superbly refined and built for unflinching performance, this might just be the perfect EDC fixed blade.
